Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS Rolling Out Before End of July?

Jul 26, 2011 by

One of the downsides of owning a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 or X10i is the inability to keep up with the latest Android OS updates. Unlike other manufacturers, it takes forever for Sony Ericsson to roll out the latest Android OS updates for its handsets.

While most of the smartphones in the market are already running on either Android 2.2 (Froyo) or Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i is still running on Android 2.1 (…clair), which as far as I can remember, also took Sony Ericsson some time to roll out.

Android 2.1 (…clair) was the latest Android OS update released for the X10, X10i and other Xperia models. It was rolled out late last year (Q4) and now, after more than six months, Sony Ericsson still hasnít released another Android OS update.

I donít know if Sony Ericsson was supposed to release an update for Android 2.2 (Froyo) but I think they deemed it more worthwhile to go with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for their next update. I also read some articles about issues with running Android 2.2 (Froyo) on the Sony Ericsson X10. Maybe thatís another reason why they did not push with the Android 2.2 update if it were true.

Earlier this year, they announced on their Product Launch Blog that they will be rolling out the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update for Sony Ericsson X10 sometime during Q2 or Q3. Honestly, I didnít bother since I have already felt enough frustrations when I waited for the Android 2.1 (…clair) update last year.

Anyways, it looks like the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update for the Sony Ericsson X10 will be rolled out this week. Based on this post from the Sony Ericssonís Facebook page, the release date would be on Week 30 which would be on the last week of July or this week.

Sony Ericsson
I got this information yesterday.

“The launch of the 2.3 software for X10 is getting closer, and the planned release date is approx. w30. The date could still be changed, since the lLaunch is depending on operators approval. The software will be rolled out continuously, just like the earlier 2.1 release. The exact launch date is depending on market and operators approval, so it will unfortunately not be possible to give precise information on launch dates for each market/operator. You will get more information once the roll out has started.”

…so it could be available any day. Keep in touch with your local teams for more specific information since I probably won’t get any more market specific info than this.

Well, letís just hope that they will’ be sticking to their plans and do the Android 2.3 Gingerbread rollout soon. Iíll keep you guys posted and I will definitely blog about the instructions on how to upgrade your Sony Ericsson X10 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread same as with the last Android OS update.
