We went to the LG Optimus One P500 Sale at the Megamall earlier. The 50% mark down price was just too good to be true so I decided to go early in the morning even without proper sleep.
We arrived at the mall at around 9.30am and fell in line at the third floor parking area. Even before 10am the line was already long, and it was even longer at the fourth floor.
Although the doors were still closed we learned that there are already more than twenty people at the LG Concept Store. These were the ones who were able to get inside the mall because they said that they were going to Fitness First or the mall’s clinic.
Minutes after 10am, the door opened. At first we were just walking when a loud crowd coming from the ground floor and second floor were running upstairs so what happened next was a sprint to the fourth floor.
We were among the first group to fall in line, and in minutes, the hallway (to the concept store) already had three lines. I took a peek along the main hallway after some more minutes and the line was already too long. A couple of hours more, the line was already at the 2nd floor (some even said that the long line already reached the ground floor).
One Day, One Hour, One Chance, ONE BIG JOKE!
Inside the LG Concept store, there were around 20 to 30 ‘lucky‘ customers. At the hallway are the three lines which also marks the start of the long line going downstairs/upstairs.
The LG personnel were so unorganized that they can’t even make a solid decision, telling the crowd to stand up and/or sit down and fix the lines a number of times. Then they asked the crowd to sign up on a list, which they later on canceled.
Why did the crowd stayed (even if it was obvious that it was impossible for that many to be processed in an hour)? It was because the LG personnel kept giving the crowd an assurance that they will get their unit even with the given time frame (so we were thinking that they have prepared something /sort of a plan B).
Then came 2pm. Everyone was shocked that there was only a single line / cashier accommodating the customers… SERIOUSLY?!!!
Just after a couple of minutes it was already clear that no one from the crowd (except the ones inside the concept store) will go home with their Android phone. They were still just past 10 customers or so after 30 mins.
No one from LG said that they will only have a single line/cashier.
It was too frustrating that all the while, the LG personnel knew that they can only accommodate the ones inside the concept store yet they did not even bother telling that to the crowd.
It would have been better for them to have announced that they will be disposing X number of units only and should have given queue stubs to the first X number of customers.
Such a wasted time.
Hats off to the brilliant marketing guys of LG, mission accomplished!
The Line
After 3PM, the crowd was just so pleased!

KOREAN COMPANY LG FOOLED BUYERS! WE DEMAND APOLOGIES! BOYCOTT LG!
I swear never to buy any LG product again! Why? Because they are the most sadistic and moronic bunch of people!
I’ve seen larger number of crowd during sales events. But this one tops it all in terms of heartlessness and stupidity. They could have given out number tags to the people who lined up when the store opened at 10am. But of course they didn’t, they want those hundreds of people to continue standing there, tired and hungry. I could not verify this, but I overheard some people saying that LG wants the big crowd to make it appear that their promotion was a success. Biggest bullshit I’ve heard. Because of this, I would tell to all my Facebook, Twitter friends and relatives to boycott LG products. Yeah, it was a success. In terms of letting people know how power-hungry, incompetent, moronic LG is, and forever erase any goodwill LG brand has with me (and a thousand more who also waited).
The sale ran for an hour, and you’d wonder why only 20 people managed to buy? Because, even if the buyers don’t want to, the sales assistants have to demonstrate the cellphone’s capabilities, like charging. Really, charging? People went there because they are well-aware of what they are buying. And basic features that are common to any cellphone could have been skipped. Or at least LG could have done the demo 4 hours earlier when people where just standing outside! Now if that is not insincerity on LG’s part to sell, then I don’t know what that is. We were fooled!
Even though organizers kept reminding us that sale would happen from 2-3pm, they also mentioned that “madami sa inyo ang mabibigyan ngayon”, we didn’t ask, they volunteered that information. Naturally, I hoped that being relatively near the start of queue, I could bring home a cellphone. No matter how we Filipinos love discounts, we are educated, rules-following citizens. You raised our expectations high, didn’t properly instill cutoffs despites earlier pleadings, meliciously set us up for this, and sucked our energy dry today till we are devoid of civility. And for this, I felt personally deeply violated.
In retrospect, LG’s actual plan obviously was to sell only a few units of Optimus that day. Hence, they made the buying process more tedious than usual. When the clock strikes past the designated sale hour, they hoped that people would still be interested in their product and purchase other models. Nice plan, except that you made it in our dignity’s expense!
Now, LG, spare me the excuse that you didn’t expect the turnout to be this big. Advertisements in major daily, radio shows and public transportation newspapers, and probably others I’m not aware of yet? Come on! Any corporate newbie knows that marketing plans are submitted, revised, reworked before any approval. So it was in their well-planned execution that only about 20 units would be sold. They rolled out all the ads and we Filipinos took the bait! We were wrongfully lured into this sadistic chaos. It’s only right that a decent apology from LG should be given! We deserve better companies, with heart.
attention DTI…we need you to punish LG for their blasted marketing gig. companies like LG should be penalized for fooling consumers…

Boo! LG and Nokia Devised a FAIL idea to create a rave with their phones! I hope Karma will catch them sooner.. They made people miserably wait for them. Good thing I was not there even if I planned earlier.. Buti na lang lasing ako after my shift kaya tinamad na ako.. as it turns out, that was a BEST DECISION!
Boycott these stupid freakin as**ho*es!
OGILVY PR ang agency ng LG…sila ang may pakana nito!
I was in SM Megamall yesterday. LG showed everyone that they are a lousy company. No planning, arrogant, no concern for customers, NOTHING!!! It was a complete waste of time for me. I WILL NEVER BY AN LG PRODUCT AGAIN IN MY LIFE! If this is they way they plan and implement their promotions, then their products must be planned and implemented the same way–TERRIBLE!!! Dont buy LG and tell your friends not to by LG. More Android phones are coming out soon. Cheaper and probably better made than LG. LETS ALL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH DTI!
I’m sorry you had go through this. I’m one of those who got into the fiasco a lil late and so there were no hard feelings when I decided to just walk away and go home empty-handed. It starts to get really frustrating when I saw people who got cheated in line and the unbelievable LG staff who watched the chaos right before their very eyes with pleasure.
I hope that the Pacquiao bout won’t make people forget how LG scammed us with their ONE DAY, ONE HOUR, ONE CHANCE scam.
I say, get the word out. Then we wait for the public to cast their verdict.
Nice marketing strategy yet one BIG failure in winning new customers. Why would I buy LG phone if they let me and thousand others get up early, wait, stand-up and wish that we can go home with a new phone. I left around 2:30 PM , seeing how slow the process of selling the units to what they say “FIRST 10″ . 3 people got their units around 2:20PM what the ??? I heard that in SM north only 20 units were sold. I admire what Nokia did, they gave away number stubs as early as 10AM and posted in their window that no units are available as early as 12:30 PM, so those in line still waiting would know there are no chances of getting a C6 . One comment was indeed right LG= LAHAT GINAGO . Lesson I learned from this hoax , buy stuff on regular prices instead no lines, no 3 hours waiting and don’t buy LG Optimus One P500
It was such a chaos.
I was there before the mall opened but wasn’t able to get in till 10am. Apparently the 1st 50 people in line came around 6-6:30am and was able to get in by stating that they’ll be going to fitness first.
So by 10am, we were already the ~400th customer in line. What was worse was we kept asking the LG organizers how many units will be sold and they kept saying that they don’t know but there was one LG organizer that told us that they have around 1000 units on hand. 1000 in 1hr, I don’t think that’s plausible unless they have 17+ counters having 1 transaction per minute. Working with that premise, we asked what they plan to do with the very long line of people, and they said that we should just stay put because DTI might pity us and extend the sale. So this is what kept everyone waiting, they didn’t cut the line! Unlike in the Nokia sale, the organizers announced by 10am that they have 50units to sell, thus dispersing the crowd. However, some people said that Nokia was able to pull some strings and was able to accommodate 50 more customers. Kudos to Nokia to trying to satisfy those that decided to stay in line. But in LG’s case, whenever people are asking why they aren’t cutting the line, they just said that they’re waiting for the DTI approval and a Korean’s signature. There was this organizer that pissed a lot of people by stating that by 2pm, media will be covering the event. People got pissed and started saying that the LG organizers want to keep the long line to show that the event was a “success”.
Come 2pm, the 1st buyer took around 10mins to buy his unit due to the interviews and what not. And that caused an uproar.
There was also a time that people were just asking for an apology from LG because they kept people in line. But they just won’t give it.
We went back to the LG store around 4pm and the LG people are stuck in their store. I asked the guard what’s happening, apparently the LG people got a threat and that’s why they can’t leave.
I just hope that they apologize to the public and don’t let this happen ever again.
buti na lang medyo maayos-ayos konti dito sa davao. and i got one. so lucky me. =)
I was actually planning on going to the sale as well… But I read in one forum that someone called LG Philippines beforehand to ask regarding the number of units available for the promo. They stated that for that hour, only 50 units were going to be available per concept store. And seeing how so many people were willing to “camp out” in line, I decided not to go anymore. (Thank God I didn’t!) I figured I wouldn’t get one anyway even if I tried..
Woke up to the sound of my alarm at 9AM but I shut it off and went back to sleep. Buti na lang inuna ko sarili ko.
The only thing this LG campaign was successful at, is to add more stigma to its already unpopular name.
@BUGPINOY Having worked with OGILVY PR, I’m pretty sure this wasn’t their doing. Not every marketing gimick is initiated by a PR agency anyway
@DaddyJoey: can I use one of your photos? The one with the LG rep.
She was the one who repeatedly ensured us that we will be able to purchase a unit. And since me and my friend were part of the first 120 people in line, we were optimistic that we will be able to purchase the said phone at its promo price.
I’m also posting an entry about this event in my blog. I’ll be citing you as the source of the photo. I’ll wait for your permission on this. Thanks!
I filed a complaint with the Dept of Trade and Industry. I suggest you all do the same to teach LG and Ogilvy and all companies that we won’t take crap like this sitting down. Here’s the link to the DTI complaint webpage: http://www.dtincr.ph/cpapp/index.php
You’re the guy with the DSLR right? I was among the first in line at the 3rd floor parking, but when I got to the LG line, there were already more than 20 people sitting there.
I knew you were going to post this on the internet and I was looking forward to it so thanks!
yes, the guys inside the booth were already there even before we went inside the mall
@badtrip, sure

@daddyjoey: thanks!
LG is a big joke. Nice blog though.
)
And the LG rep is caught camwhoring in the middle of this friggin’ mess. Goes to show how professional LG and its employees are.
Guys, this is a confirmed info from one of the SM Megamall Admin staff… The so called permit for the said event was only processed the day before and was approved by SM admin on the day of the sale itself…
I was one of the people who got cheated by LG. We were made to believe that there were enough stocks to go around. One LG representative even said that if there was a need to ask for more stocks they will do it to accomodate the demand. But none of it ever happend. The so called SALE was poorly planned and executed by LG sales and marketing dept.
and the lg staff in black? her name is “fatima” she doesn’t even use their product. She has a nokia E72 =P
she also admitted that the info given to them by their managers are inconsistent…
Weak people fooled by wicked people
@NoFace. indeed
forgive our gullibility
LG Philippines’ official statement re the sale http://www.yugatech.com/blog/events/lg-issues-official-statement-special-offer/
You took the risk to line so take the consequences. i-bblame niyo pa ang LG? WOW. Ambisyoso kayo hahaha LG is a big KOREAN company.. And what happened was an LG branch tactics.
1-2% of the line. 1 % ba nun is nakapasok na sa mall ng hindi pa bukas.
pissed – hindi dahil pumila kami ng pagkatagal tagal na pwede namang umalis but because they told us to stay and mabilis ang processing and we can accomodate you.
pissed – because 10am palang they saw lots of people in line and still at 2pm they started out with 1 cashier.
dumbfounded – because after the sale perioud , they could not or rather they would not disclose how many they sold. less than 30 based from the line, but they won’t tell. because it would be very apparent that they did something wrong if they told us that they were only able to sell 20-30 in an hour when their staff said 1 minute per transaction. and yes 1 minute is enough for people already decided to buy.
Are Android phones popular in the Philippines?…
Yes I could say they are. While I have no hard figures to present, major Android phone manufacturers Samsung and HTC both have a huge presence locally.
One indicator of Android’s popularity is when LG put their Optimus One on sale. Refer to this blog…
mga bobo ang LG kase.. know what, sna nung una plng ngsabi n cla ng first 100 fones in one hour, instead of “one hour sale only,, natural pipilahan cla ng mga tao,, d ba naisip ng lg n maraming taoong mgagalit sakanila?at the same time, masisira ung company nila dahil sa gnawa nila?, inaalala nila ung publicity sa media, they dont even think about the people who’s been there since dawn, dba??, sna pinagmeryenda nyo nlng ung mga tao para worth it nman ung pagpila nila, hahahah lols
buti nlng maganda ung nkblack n ngwwork sa lg.. =)
