The hunt for the family Christmas tree

For weeks now, the ‘baby boss’ keeps on asking me when we’re going to shop for Christmas decors. Each time we go to the malls, she gets too excited on seeing the decors: the lights, Santa, the reindeers, the snowmen, the lanterns and especially the Christmas trees.

With the Christmas season just around the corner, we finally decided to buy one to warm up the house.

So, we went to our usual weekend malling spots: Greenbelt – Landmark – Glorietta – SM. This is how we usually spend our time at the malls on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, strolling and window-shopping back and forth. A single lap/round will do (consider it as an exercise :) ) or you can call it ‘mall-stroll-window-shopping-hopping’. :D

On buying the Christmas tree, we only planned to check Landmark and SM. The simple reason is simply the reasonable price. :D

We checked on the third floor of Landmark first. This is where the Christmas decorations are, from the Christmas trees, lights, decors, and all them other Christmas bling-blings. :) I personally like Landmark because I can easily find all particular items I need in a single area.

Looking for decors was not that hard, especially when there are a lot of decors and trees on display, each with different color/motif. You only need to decide on the motif and tell the customer assistants and they will be very much willing to help you get what you want.

I was surprised with the kind of decorations they have nowadays, from the flowers/poinsettias, leaves, vines, Christmas balls, etc. all readily available in different colors, shapes, materials and sizes. I remember back in the days when we would buy materials and create these decors from scratch. :)

Ok, so the plan was to canvass first, so after checking out the decors in Landmark, we moved to SM. Unlike in Landmark, you can find Christmas decors for sale in almost every floor of SM. But they have two major areas specifically for Christmas stuffs, one on the ground floor and one on the top floor.

Again, we continued checking for stuffs, going through the different Christmas items on display and noting their prices. Knowing all these malls in Makati and their price tags, I was surprised to find out that the Christmas trees in SM were selling for a price which is almost doubled as of that one in Landmark. Most items were priced pretty much the same except for the Christmas trees.

Just a figure, Landmark is selling two kinds of 5 ft. Christmas trees, one for roughly Php 1,100 and the other for Php 1,400. On the other hand, the cheapest 5 ft. Christmas tree we saw in SM is being sold for around Php 2,800-3,000.

After asking the sales assistant, I learned that the Christmas trees in SM are made out of different materials. I forgot the exact term he said but checking thoroughly, the leaves are made of nylon/plastic like material. I just wished that they had more cheaper Christmas trees to choose from.

With these, we went back to Landmark and decided to go with the cheaper Christmas tree and just put the money we’re going to save on buying other decors and accessories. :)

Well then, I have noted some things that might be of help to you:

  • The average price of rice lights is around Php 170.00 – 200.00 (rice lights are the ordinary Christmas lights).
  • Price of Led mini lights are from Php 490.00 up (Led lights are brighter low energy lights. It also produce little heat).
  • You would need around 2-3 boxes of Christmas lights for a 5 ft Christmas tree.
  • Landmark sells a decent 5 ft Christmas tree for Php 1,100 -1,400 (we bought the latter, the difference between them based on the sales assistant is the number of tree branches/leaves so we didn’t mind shelling out a couple of hundreds more)
  • 6 ft at less than Php 2,000, 7 ft at less than Php 3,000, 8 ft at less than Php 4,000, 9 ft at less than Php 5,000 and 10 ft at Php 6,000+
  • The poinsettia leaves and other decors for the Christmas tree sells for Php 35.00+ per piece. Around 15-20 leaves would do for a 5 ft tree.
  • The socks, santa, reindeer cloth decors sells for Php 50.00 – 100.00 a piece
  • The Christmas balls are ranging from Php 100-250 per box, depending on the size and design. For a 5 ft Christmas tree, you would need around 3 boxes of Christmas balls.

By the way, we chose violet/lavender/pink as motif for our family Christmas tree.

Happy Christmas Tree shopping! Cheers!
